You know, I've never raked anything but cold ashes out through the ash slot, but they fall quite rapidly down to a metal bucket that I have below the slot. I find it hard to believe that hot ashes would ever raise the temperature of the slot to the point where you would have to line it with fire bricks - also, that would be an awful lot of work!
