Hi Tom

I built a Masterly Tail last year and I regularly rake out the last of the hot embers into the slot when I bake. The embers just sit there and glow and have done NO damage in 30 or so bread bake type firings. If you were really worried you would just make up a wooden plug for the clean out chute on the side to limit the amount of oxygen getting into the chute and hence keeping the embers burning.

PS I cleaned out the slot a week ago .. not because it was full after 30 firings but to see if there was any damage. just a very dusty and slightly blackened brick/besser block wall.

Regards Paul
