You are certainly right about bricks not being too precise. My masonry supplier (about 20 miles east of San Francisco) only has one source of fire bricks and these just will not lay flat. I cannot tell you the number of times I have looked at your picture r2copy.jpg with enormous envy. My bricks just will not lay this flat. You said that I could grind the spot where the pizza will be cooked. How? My background is in woodworking and not masonry. With wood I would just use a sander to make the surface flat. Is there a masonry tool which will do the same thing?
By the way, the walls are up, and I will be laying the dome next week.
