Hi Jerry,
I use a garden hoe for pushing the fire and coals around. Then I sweep the remaining ash away with a brush made from coco fibre that I have attatched to a broom stick. The brush was only a couple of dollars from the local hardware. It doesn't appear burn of smoulder on the hot floor and is quite soft so I get an ash free space for cooking and baking.
