Hi Ken,
After pouring concrete hearth slab (and when it is hard in ~2 days)) take wooded forms/boxing off. View photo m7 or n5 (on n5 supports under the new slab are off too.) Ones you reach this stage; you cut out the board for ash drop, hand saw does the job easy or just simply brake it off. As you say you can cut it out before pouring the slab also, both ways are okay.

Old roofing corrugated sheets can be used instead of this board as well, or complete surface removable wooden form, if that helps. r
