Digital thermometer with K-type thermocouple probe
For those interested in using digital thermometer to measure whole range of temperatures in wood fired ovens (and reading above or below the range) here is a very good one to buy. This meter works with the right to use k-type thermocouple probe. Wherever you search for these ask for “Type K Input” thermometer.
I have 2 of them but in thermometer version only, not multimeter, from Temperature Controls pty. ltd. in NSW here is the Digital Handheld Thermometer TC305K details page. They are very reliable guys I reckon they will ship also overseas. The K type thermocouple is in their catalog among SD Types. You’ll need to use the yellow wire as well as it has the correct resistance in ohms. And even if I measure frequently, say temp reading every 5 mins often so per hours, for years I haven’t had to change the powering 9 Volt battery, just because I don’t leave the meter On for long time.
I am very happy with these digital meters, they are pretty accurate for working with kilns. Also potters use them a lot. One push switches between °F and °C scales. Although I never used them for cooking in wood fired ovens. For cooking I learned to measure temperature on by looking in and sticking my hand inside or when high accuracy is needed I use self standing stainless steel thermometers because they work the best for me and are in fact easiest to use.
Measuring Oven Temperature
BUT if you like you can use these handheld digital thermometers for example to measure inner wall temperature (inside the bricks’ mass) or in the floor to estimate how long will a new firing further take. Or to calculate how many more hours will the oven stay hot, after a single heat up, for reloaded baking (of bread batches) or ho long it will remain warm for fruit drying. However, if you decide to measure with these k-type probes also inside in the chamber’s volume space, then to get the most accurate reading with the thermometer push the thermocouple tip completely inside so it’s poking 6mm or 1/4″ through a side wall into the oven.

Need digital high temperature thermometer for outside clay wood fired pizza oven. Would like to mount the long enough thermocouple probe through clay insulation into the oven’s chamber. Then connect the probe with the digital thermometer device using a wire with a correct power resistance for these. Do you have them … cost?

Digital temperature devices that measure temperatures or temperature gradients use different varieties of principles as to how they sensor the actual measured atmosphere changes. No response back on the second hand Cement mixers advertisement I made … maybe sold?? Anyway I can get a new (Chinese made I am sure) 3 1/2 cubic feet mixer for $200 … should be good enough for me to use then sell when I am done with building. The weights are great, thanks. Any thoughts on mounting a thermocouple in the oven floor? Better to install between firebricks, or just drill a small hole in one brick?

Yes better if you do not drill through firebrick if you don’t need to because that weakens it somewhat. Too much work like that also. Easier and better if the probe travels in through the area where firebricks join their corners – grind each corner edge of the four bricks, just a little, to get the space easily. I use only the self standing stainless steel thermometers approach, that is totally enough for me as it’s accurate measuring as well. But definitely you can play with the digitally temperature reading too! Will be always interesting.

A while back had an electric stove with heater that did not get hot enough, we measured the temperature internally around the elements with this digital thermometer with the probe on it. According to a professional electrician the power supplied to the heating element was not enough to get the coils more hot because they were too wide in diameter they could not heat up. After I had to check my breaker panel; I found that some of the breakers were not good. I had the electrician replace the whole panel and breakers and the size-type of the electric heating elements inside the heater. Things were back to normal as they say. That is my experience once with a similar electric thermometer.

The Fluke 561 HVACPro Infrared Thermometer is a very good instrument. This digital thermometer allows to plug in a mini K type connection and read the temperature also via a K thermocouple installed inside the oven. Or in addition shoot the lazer beam inside on clean bricks to find hearth, wall and ceiling temperature.
