Bob,
The same refractory mortar as used for dense firebricks will withstand temps. But this insulation firebrick layer will move with the heat expansion when put directly onto dense part (these outer bricks will shift little bit) - I think you count with that. So it will do nicely if the whole firing part with the insulation is boxed in. r
