I am also in the process of building my own wood oven & will be using solid cream clay bricks for the dome,back & sides & fire bricks for the hearth.

My understanding is that clay bricks can be suitable for oven building, especially the lighter coloured ones because they will have less oxides & are more stable at higher temps. I have also discussed this with the clay brick manufacturer.

Clay bricks are also a lot cheaper to buy than fire bricks here in Perth.

I have previously emailed Rado & I do recall that his advice was that it will be OK to use certain clay bricks.
